The turbine of Iran's first nuclear power plant has been successfully tested, chief of Iran's atomic energy organization said Wednesday.

Fereidoon Abbasi told reporters that the tests were successfully carried out Tuesday on the turbine of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.

The power plant has reached 40 percent of its total capacity, and preparations are being made for the initial launch of the plant, Abbasi was quoted by the semi-official news agency Mehr as saying.

Abbasi announced on Aug. 17 that his country was planning for the official inauguration of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran in mid-November or December.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant is currently nearing its preoperation phase, which means that initial tests for its reactor and turbine are in the final stages, he said.

Abbasi said earlier that the first phase of the plant would start by the end of August if the tests were completed.

Construction of the Bushehr plant began in 1975 by several German companies. The work was halted when the United States imposed an embargo of hi-tech supplies on Iran after the 1979 revolution. Russia signed a contract with Iran to complete the construction in 1998.

Completion of the plant's construction has been postponed several times due to technical and financial challenges and pressure from the United States.
