Manuel Pinto da Costa Elected as President of Sao Tome

Former Sao Tome and Principe president Manuel Pinto da Costa beat his runoff rival Sunday to reclaim his old post, the western African country's election authorities announced Monday.

According to news reports reaching here, Pinto da Costa, who ran the country since its independence in 1975 until 1991, was supported by 52.88 percent of the votes while parliament speaker Evaristo Carva took the rest.

The first round of elections was held in the Gulf of Guinea island off Central Africa on July 17, during which Pinto da Costa, 73, won 35 percent of votes, ahead of Carvalho's 21 percent.

According to official estimates, more than 90,000 eligible voters out of a total population of 200,000 participated the elections.

With the final victory, Pinto da Costa was poised to succeed outgoing president Fradique de Menezes who served two terms since 2001. The former president has campaigned on a promise to bring development to the island and tap its potential in oil, cocoa, tourism and other sectors.
