With the capture of war crimes fugitive Goran Hadzic, Serbia was closing a "difficult" chapter in its recent history, said Serbian President Boris Tadic on Wednesday.

Hadzic, the former president of the Republic of Serbian Krajina, a self-declared autonomous region of Croatia, has been indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for the persecution and removal of the non-Serb population from approximately one-third of the territory of Croatia during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

"Serbia with this has completed its most difficult chapter in cooperation with the ICTY and Serbia will continue to fulfill its international obligations," Tadic was quoted as saying by Radio Television Serbia (RTS) as he addressed the nation .

Tadic added that he expected no particular reaction from the European Union because Serbia had been motivated by moral and legal reasons and because of the awareness that this was a precondition for reconciliation in the war-torn region.
