Russia and Britain would have greater military cooperation in the near future, Russia's General Staff chief Nikolai Makarov said Tuesday.

"Relations between our military establishments will climb to a new level shortly," Makarov said after holding talks with visiting British general David Richards here.

Makarov said that, after a long period of cool relations, cooperation between Russian and British defense ministries had been set to a more active mode from now on, RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Makarov said the two officers also discussed European security and the situation in Libya.

Richards said the two countries' military ties would enjoy further development, especially in light of the ongoing efforts to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.

After the talks, Richards inspected drills by an infantry brigade from Moscow region. His delegation leaves for St.Petersburg, Russia's second largest city, for meeting with other Russian military officials.
