Myanmar Releases Up-Date Quake Death Toll at 73

The Myanmar authorities released the up-date revised death toll of Thursday's major earthquake which was aired by the Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV)-4 on Friday night with 73 registered dead and 125 injured as of Friday night 9:30 p.m. (local time).

A total of 225 residential houses, 11 monasteries and 9 government department buildings were destroyed in the mainly affected areas of Tachileik, Tarlay, Naryaung, Kyatkuni and Monglin.

Relief measures are being taken by the government's Natural Disaster Preparedness Central Committee by opening some relief camps, the MRTV-4 said, adding that a government delegation, led by Major-General Aung Than Htut of the Ministry of Defense and involving some deputy ministers, inspected the quake-stricken areas Friday.

The MRTV-4 also telecast the scene of the quake-hit areas.

A strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale jolted Loimwe, 56 kilometers southeast of Kengtung in northeastern Myanmar on Thursday night at 20:29:30 hours local time.

The quake's epicenter, at 10 kilometers deep, struck in the hills of Myanmar bordering Thailand and Laos.
