Full-Scale Simulated Tsunami Alert to Involve 33 Countries in Caribbean

An exercise, named Caribe Wave 11, is due to test the warning systems of 33 countries in the Caribbean region on March 23 by issuing the first full-scale simulated tsunami alert, the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said on Thursday.

Following the earthquake-triggered tsunami that struck Japan, the exercise is to test the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions, which was established in 2005 by the countries of the region in collaboration with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), it said in a statement.

The alert will be issued on March 23 by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center (United States) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Ewa Beach (Hawaii, U.S.) after a stimulated earthquake of 7.6 magnitude off the coast of the American Virgin Islands, with a coverage of 33 countries throughout the Caribbean region.

This simulated tsunami "aims to test the effectiveness of alert, monitoring and warning systems among all the emergency management organizations," according to UNESCO.

Previous experience has proved that even saving minutes will mean a real number of survivors when dealing with a catastrophe like tsunami, therefore it's crucially important of rapid transmission of information, the organization underlined.

According to UN figure, over the last 500 years, 75 tsunamis have occurred in the Caribbean, accounting for about 10 percent of the entire number of oceanic tsunamis in the world during that period.
