The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) extended its condolences on Wednesday in a statement to the Japanese government and people still suffering from last Friday's devastating earthquake.

"The significant earthquake and tsunami in Japan have claimed large scale casualties and caused serious property damage. SCO extends its profound condolences to the victims," said SCO Secretary-General Muratbek Imanaliyev in a statement Wednesday.

The statement also pledged to help Japan overcome its current difficulties, as well as erase future consequences brought on by the earthquake.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck northeastern Japan and triggered a massive tsunami on Friday, destroying thousands of houses and leaving thousands of people dead or missing.

The natural disaster also damaged nuclear plants in the quake-stricken areas, leading to radioactive leaks.
