Canada will provide approximately 25,000 woven thermal wool blankets to support the affected people of Japan in the aftermath of last Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami, a senior official said on Tuesday.

The relief supplies are in response to a first request by Japan, said Canadian Minister of International Cooperation Beverley J. Oda.

The supplies will leave Pearson Airport in Toronto by commercial airline Wednesday morning and will arrive in Tokyo the following day at noon local time, added Oda, a Japanese-Canadian.

Meanwhile, Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said that the Japanese government has specified the assistance it needs from the international community.

Cannon made these remarks following his meeting with his Japanese counterpart Takeaki Mastumoto in Paris who underlined the grave situation facing his country.

Cannon, who was in Paris to attend the Group of 8 foreign ministers' meeting, said Canada stands ready to assist and will be part of the effort in support of the government and people of Japan.

Canada has said it has offered its expertise and assistance to Japan, including a 17-member Disaster Victim Identification team, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear technical expertise and equipment, Canadian Forces military assets to facilitate humanitarian relief efforts, relief stocks, and emergency medical and engineering capabilities, but it's not clear if the offers have been delivered.

Japan's National Police Agency said that last Friday's catastrophic quake and ensuing tsunami have left 3,676 people dead and 7,558 others unaccounted for by 08:00 a.m. Wednesday Tokyo time (2300 GMT Tuesday).
