The Russian Emergencies Ministry on Sunday confirmed Japan has agreed to accept a team of Russian rescuers and the team is preparing to fly to the country stricken by devastating quakes and tsunami.

"An Il-76 plane of the Russian Emergencies Ministry is preparing to fly to Japan to deliver about 50 rescuers, three relief and rescue vehicles and the other necessary equipment," spokeswoman for the ministry Irina Andrianova said.

She also noted that the Il-76 plane will take off from Russia's Ramenskoye airfield when an air corridor for the plane was opened by Japanese side.

The team will work in Japan independently, Andrianova said, adding that the team is scheduled to stay in Japan for two weeks.

According to local reports, this is the first time Russia has offered such assistance to Japan.

On Friday, a massive 9-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan's main Honshu Island, which had triggered huge tsunami along Japan's Pacific coast and caused hundreds of deaths and catastrophic damage.

After the quake, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has expressed his condolence to the victims and their families.
