Russia has urged all sides in Egypt to immediately provide a secure environment to journalists covering the ongoing political crisis in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Friday.

"We believe that the oppression of media representatives ... is unacceptable. We also urge an end to the violence and a start to the resolution of the crisis," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the Reporters without Borders organization, 26 journalists in Egypt have been attacked, 19 were arrested or kidnapped, three are missing and one is in coma.

In its Thursday statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed Russia opposed any external pressure on the Egyptian leadership and Egyptians and believed the country had to resolve its current political crisis by itself.

Supporters and opponents of Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak clashed in Cairo on Wednesday. Egyptian Minister of Health Ahmed Farid said Thursday five people had been killed and more than 800 injured in the clashes so far.

Mubarak announced Tuesday that he would not seek re-election in September this year, but would serve out his term. However, his opponents still demand his immediate resignation.
