Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday demanded compensation for an oil spill off in Timor sea which destroys environment.

The Thai-operated West Atlas oil rig spilled thousands of barrel oil in Timor Sea laid between Indonesia and Australia since it in August last year.

"Of course we will file a claim to the firm which has caused the oil spill along with maintaining diplomatic ties with the government of Thailand and Australia," President Yudhoyono told a cabinet meeting.

Reports said that the oil spill has entered Indonesian waters and damage livelihood of fishermen at the coastal areas.

"The company must give compensation to the community at East Nusa Tenggara, particularly Rote island and its surrounding, as its responsibility on the accident," said Yudhoyono.

But, President Yudhoyono did not mention how much the compensation demanded.

The government has set up a team chaired by Indonesian Transport Minister Freddy Numberi to file the suit.

So far, the team has calculated that the lost caused by the damage reaches at least hundreds billion rupiah.
