At least 40 people were shot over the weekend across Chicago, with seven of them slain, Chicago Tribune reported.
The toll covers a period from 8:43 p.m. local time Friday to 6: 39 Monday morning.
On Sunday, Chicago Police acknowledged a high number shootings over the weekend and attributed more than half of them to the work of gangs.
The total from overnight Sunday into Monday morning was at least 18, including a one-year-old girl who suffered a graze wound and a 44-year-old man who was shot in the head and killed.
That girl and four men were struck by gunfire on the Near West Side in the midnight in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, police said.
The last reported shooting was a man shot in the head at 6:39 a. m. in the south suburb.
Earlier Sunday, a man who was shot in the chest at 75th and Halsted streets at 2:45 a.m. was pronounced dead an hour later at hospital, according to police.
Earlier Sunday, a 44-year-old man was found slain about 2:02 a. m. with a gunshot wound to his head in the south suburb, police said. A 31-year-old man was shot about 5 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Halsted Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood when he was waiting for a bus.
No one is in custody for any of the shootings.
