British Flights Ban Extended But May be Lifted on Tuesday

Restrictions on flights in and out of Britain due to the threat posed to planes by the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland were extended into Tuesday morning, but there is a possibility to lift the ban on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, National Air Traffic Service (NATS), the air traffic control agency in Britain, said " based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday."

However, the statement also gives the possibility to lift the ban as saying that the Scottish airspace will be open from 7 o' clock Tuesday, and "restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow."

The cloud from an Icelandic volcano has prevented many flights from entering or leaving Britain since noon on Thursday -- at a huge cost to the industry.
