The U.S. Middle East special envoy George Mitchell arrived in Damascus on Wednesday, following a visit to Lebanon, which is his eighth visit to the region and third to Syria since taking his post.
Mitchell met with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem. Limited Press were allowed into the meeting. No press releases regarding the outcome are available up till now.
The Syrian daily Tishreen played down the significance of Mitchell's visit in its Tuesday's report, commenting that Mitchell's visit to the Middle East is bound to fail as the United State's support for Israel is unchanged.
"Real peace in the Middle East requires an Israeli commitment to the relevant international resolutions and an American push in this direction, which is convincing Israel of the necessity to abide by these resolutions as the only basis for peace," the paper said.
The absence of an Israeli partner that could be referred to is the reason for the deadlock in the Middle East peace process, Tishreen said, calling on the Israeli government to believe in peace and work for its achievement.
The Tishreen report lashed out at the Israeli government for escalating the security situation in the region and the Palestinian territories in particular.
The paper criticized Washington for its pursuit to please the Israeli government, noting that no hopes could be attached to Mitchell's trip.
Syria's official Newspaper al-Bath commented on Wednesday that the United States cannot be a fair mediator to solve all conflicts in the region. |
