Police in Pakistan arrested the mastermind of the suicide attacks in the capital, the police chief said on Friday.
Jamshed Alias Tahir had been involved in various terror activities, including the suicide bombing at the World Food Program office in Islamabad in October, the police chief Kalim Imam said.
Tahir was arrested on a tip from Margalla hills in Islamabad, Imam told a news conference.
The bearded suspect was produced to the media at the press conference along with the suicide jacket recovered from him.
Tahir was the head of "Ghazi Brigade" formed after the army carried out three-day operation against the Islamabad's Red Mosque in July 2007, which had killed 100 people, including 12 soldiers, according to the government.
Abdul Rashid Ghazi, deputy of the mosque, also died while fighting the troops. Ghazi Brigade was named after the slain leader.
The police chief said the terrorist was involved in the attacks on the office of emergency police and World Food Programme building.
He said five suicide attacks took place in the capital in the current year and the hard-core terrorist was involved in all the attacks. He said police have recovered explosives and suicide jacket from the terrorist.
Imam said that the terrorist had a group operating in the capital and during initial investigation and the police have gathered strong leads to arrest other terrorists.
Responding to a question, the Inspector General police said the capital police have arrested a total of 72 terrorists including six suicide bombers besides their facilitators. |
