British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Friday his government would provide any help needed following severe flooding in northwestern England.
"Our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by these floods, and our thanks go out to all the emergency services and all other agencies involved in the response who continue in their extraordinary efforts to help the people affected," Brown said.
In the county of Cumbria, more than 200 people were evacuated from their homes overnight following a deluge of rain. Several bridges also collapsed, main roads were blocked and schools were closed this morning.
Brown said he had spoken to Chief Constable of Cumbria Craig Mackey about the offer of support earlier Friday.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn was also in the county assessing response needs, he added.
The Environment Agency said the situation in the area was "very serious". Hundreds of properties had been flooded. British Royal Air Force helicopters had also airlifted at least 50 people to safety, with some forced to break through the roofs of their houses.¡¡ Worst hit have been the towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, Cumbria, in England's picturesque Lake District.
