Kosovo Coalition Government on Verge of Divorce

The coalition government of Kosovo may be on the verge of divorce after the ruling Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) decided Thursday to reassess its relationship with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK).

PDK deputy president Hajredin Kuqi on Friday blamed President Fatmir Sejdiu's LDK for breaking a deal for no-coalition agreements with other political entities in local elections. Earlier reports said that the LDK would be excluded from the coalition government.

"We'll continue today our consultative discussions and then will take the final decision," Kuqi said.

The LDK on Wednesday reached an agreement with an opposition party -- the Alliance for the Future of Kosova -- in order to win its support in the Dec. 13 run-off election for mayor of the Prizren municipality.

Earlier reports said Prime Minister Hashim Thaci's PDK on Friday was to sign a new coalition agreement with two smaller parties, the Alliance for New Kosovo and the Democratic League of Dardania.

The PDK and LDK established their coalition government in January 2008 ahead of a declaration of independence. However, rifts emerged in mid October as local election campaigns began.

The local elections in Kosovo began on Nov. 15. Preliminary official results showed that the PDK would secure the most votes in 16 municipality assemblies while LDK would lead in eight municipalities.

The ethnic Albanian-dominated Kosovo, a breakaway province of Serbia, unilaterally declared independence on Feb. 17, 2008. However, Serbia has said it would never recognize Kosovo's independence, regarding the move as illegal and contrary to international law.
