A top Palestinian National Authority (PNA) official said Tuesday that it is time for the international community to recognize a Palestinian state.

"It is time for the international community to recognize a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital that lives side by side with Israel," chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told a press conference in Jordan.

"We are seriously studying with the Arab states to head to the UN Security Council after consultations with the United States, the European Union and all involved parties, to seek recognition by the international community of a Palestinian state on 1967 borders," said Erekat.

At the joint press conference with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, Erekat slammed remarks of Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt earlier in the day in Brussels that it is " premature" to recognize a Palestinian state.

French foreign minister reiterated his country's commitment and support to the two-state formula that envisages the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

Kouchner, who said France is keen on resuming peace talks, stressed his country's support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"Without Abbas there is no chance to proceed with the peace process. We want to stress that Abbas is essential for the peace process," said the French official, who recently urged Abbas not to step down as the latter said he would not run for a second term in elections scheduled in January.

Erekat also criticized the continuation of Israeli settlement activities, slamming Israel for planning to establish 900 housing units in Gilo settlement.
