Salvadorian authorities said on Tuesday that two news cases of the A/H1N1 flu have been confirmed in the country, bringing the total to six from Monday, and there are two more suspects that still have to be checked, according to news reaching Mexico City.

Experts have investigated 18 cases so far, ruling out the majority of them through testing, the Health Ministry's head of epidemiology Mario Serpas told media in capital San Salvador.

The two new cases are related to the nation's first case, a young woman who fell ill after visiting Mexico, Serpas said. She has now infected five people and is the only source of the outbreak in San Salvador, he said.

One pending case, a 33-year-old woman with symptoms consistent with the H1N1 flu, might represent the start of a new chain. She fell ill after being in contact with a U.S. citizen.

El Salvador has declared a national alert due to the new flu, which causes headaches, high body temperature, muscular pain and breathing difficulties. Authorities have set up a sanitary cordon at airports and borders.

Some 9,830 people have been infected with the virus in 40 nations, according to the World Health Organization. The largest number of dead are in Mexico, with 72 confirmed by this nation's Health Ministry. There are four dead in the United States, which has now overtaken Mexico as the nation with the most infected.
