EU foreign ministers will discuss the Mexican swine flu outbreak, which has killed 103 people in the Latin American nation.

European Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou arrived in Luxembourg at noon Monday to discuss the issue with foreign ministers from the 27-member bloc, underlining the importance the EU is attaching to the crisis.

An extraordinary EU health ministers' meeting will be held soon, according to a statement issued by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels on Monday.

"The Commission is following the situation concerning the swine influenza very closely, internally together with the member states, and internationally in cooperation with the World Health Organization," Barroso said.

He noted the commission will continue to assess the information from experts, evaluate the potential danger, and decide together with EU member states on the measures to take.

So far, the swine flu has been largely limited to the North American continent, but the Spanish health ministry on Monday confirmed a first case of the disease in the country involving a man, as well as other six suspected cases.

France on Sunday cleared three suspected cases, and still has one suspected case, the test result of which is expected on Monday.

Swine influenza is a respiratory disease that infects pigs and does not normally infect humans. But sporadic cases do occur, usually for people who have had close contact with pigs.
