Kenya will host the 2009 Africa Senior Badminton Championships starting in Nairobi from Saturday to April 23.

Defending champions, Seychelles, who beat South Africa two years ago in Mauritius, return to defend their title.

Other nations that have confirmed their participation alongside hosts Kenya include Mauritius, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Uganda and Algeria.

At the same time, Kenya Badminton Association (KBA) will stage the Kenya International Championships with a top prize of 5,000 dollars from April 24 to 26.

Teams from the USA, Scotland, Iran, Denmark, Canada, Greece, India and Slovenia have been invited to compete against the hosts.

KBA chairperson, Anna Maina, said both tournaments would be used by her federation to prepare the national team for next year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.

"We are planning to spread the sport to the grassroots and the tournaments will be a huge success in sensitizing Kenyans about the sport," Maina said.
