Chile has identified 58 fauna and 75 flora species on the verge of extinction, the National Commission of Environment (Conama) said Friday.
"In this process (of the identification), there are two standouts -- the southern right whale and humpback whale, classified as endangered and vulnerable respectively, as well as a high percentage of species from Juan Fernandez Archipelago," Chilean Environment Minister Anlia Uriarte said.
Only about 100 southern right whales are currently living in the South Pacific, said Uriarte, who also heads the ministerial commission.
The humpback whale is classified as "vulnerable" as it has begun a slow but progressive process of recovering, she added.
Meanwhile, Alvaro Sapag, executive director of Conama, said the identification process "allows us to have precise and relevant information on the species that live in our territory."
"The classification is the fundamental material to elaborate conservation programs and prevent eventual damages or negative impacts on the flora and fauna," Sapag said.
