Police shot and killed a man that held a teacher hostage and attempted to harm a local official during negotiations at a primary school in Qianjiang, central China's Hubei province, on Tuesday morning, according to China News Service.

More than 50 students vacated the school when the man, identified as Zhang Zeqing, entered a classroom reportedly wielding a knife and an unidentified object police believe was a "self-made explosive." However, the teacher Zhang targeting for abduction stayed behind. Two local officials arrived at the scene after hearing about the incident and negotiated for the teacher's release. Police shot and killed the man when he reportedly tried to pour gasoline on one of the officials as the teacher was set free.

Zhang had previously served two separate prison sentences for burglary and illegally manufacturing guns, respectively.

All faculty and students were evacuated soon after the situation occurred.

Zhang's motive for the incident has not yet been determined.
