Anchor: A painter who focuses on a person's inner world has just opened his first solo exhibition at Beijing's Today Art Museum.

CRI's XYee has more.

Reporter: Zhang Wenrong was born in 1982 in Zhangye, a city in northwest China's Gansu province. Having graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, Zhang has completed oil paintings that range from figure portraits to pure landscapes.

Despite the breadth of themes he portrays, nearly all his paintings convey a feeling of quiet loneliness, deriving from Zhang's childhood.

"For instance, I used to often draw trains and rails, but in a different way from other painters. Well, that's because when I was still a junior high school student, I never strayed away from home for more than a week for some reason. And then one time, I accidentally boarded a train. The experience empowered me with more understanding about loneliness, which is expressed in my paintings by trains, rails, lonely deserts as well as other bleak and lifeless scenes."

According to the painter, nearly half of his landscape oil paintings contain human characters in the composition, while the other half has none.

Zhang Wenrong also dedicates himself to figure paintings.

Zhang's obsessive interest in people's inner perception is the source of inspiration behind many of his artworks.

"My figure paintings reflect various emotions. The characters in my figure painting are not any specific persons. I'm particularly interested in the relationship between humans and the environment as well as in the contact between people. Man has many rich emotions, including feelings of melancholy and mutual understanding, which may be hard to express in language but easier to display in a painting."

A young artist of the post-80's generation, Zhang found success with many of his paintings acknowledged and collected by professional collectors and artists. Even the renowned playwright Xu Bing bought one.

Zhang humorously compared his success to the windfall profits that enable him to advance his pursuit of a unique painting language and expression.

"The Realism of Hallucination" is Zhang Wenrong's solo painting exhibition, which highlights his latest representative pieces like "Reading Lenin and Wheezing Dog," as well as "Hostess in Her Own Light." The show will run until the 16th of June in the Today Art Museum.
