Tourism authorities in northwest China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region have clarified an early media report that the region offers 500 yuan for each traveler as an incentive.

In an interview with a web reporter affiliated with People's Daily on Thursday, Fan Fenliang with Xinjiang tourism publicity and promotion centre said the incentive program was only valid between January and April this year.

Fan explained that the fund was aimed at attracting tour groups from 19 Chinese provinces and municipalities at low season. The designated regions include Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong, Zhejiang. The regions have partnered with Xinjiang for a long time to help its economic and social development.

In a separate interview with China Radio International, Xinjiang's tourism administration chief Yinamu Naisierding said the travel incentive, which totals 20 million yuan, have all be given to visitors from the 19 regions in the form of coupons, before May this year.

Each coupon values 500 yuan and visitors can use it to buy Xinjiang local products and pay for fees related to hotels and scenic spots.
