A helpless female driver drowned to death in her car after waiting for several hours for rescuers early Friday when tropical storm Kong-rey brought torrential rains to Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong province, Guangzhou Daily reports.
The victim, Tong Xuxian, was en route to Luohu Railway Station to meet her husband and son who were on a return trip, when her car became trapped in floodwater under a bridge.
Tong's husband, surnamed Huang, said Tong informed him of her situation on the phone at 4:40am.
"She said the water was about to submerge her knees but that she had contacted police."
Huang heard his wife's voice for the last time at 5:11 when the flood water reached Tong's neck. After a phone call with his classmate two minutes later, Huang could no longer get through to Tong's phone.
Huang also tried to seek help from Shenzhen police in vain.
The police reported the incident to Nanhai Rescue Bureau at 6:20am. The rescuers arrived at the scene at 7:35. And Tong's body was recovered at around 8:00.
A fire fighter who took part in the rescue said the water on the road once reached a depth of three meters when the rain poured down.
The report didn't explain why police had failed to reach Tong in time.
The tragedy again raises public awareness of safe driving in rain. The death of a male driver who drowned in his car on Beijing's 2nd Ring Road during heavy rainfall that claimed 37 lives on July 21, 2012, still haunts many in the country.
The rain also caused several landslides in the city, leading to underground parking lots and hundreds of cars being submerged.
