The body of Yang Baibing, former director of the General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), was cremated in Beijing on Monday.
Yang, also former secretary-general of the Central Military Commission, passed away due to illness on Jan. 15. He was 93.
Chinese leaders Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Keqiang and Liu Yunshan attended Yang's funeral Monday at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in west Beijing, says a statement issued by the General Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.
The statement says Yang was an "outstanding member of the CPC, a seasoned and loyal Communist, a proletarian revolutionist, and an excellent leader of the political work in the military."
Yang was born in southwest China's city of Chongqing on Sept. 9, 1920. He is the younger brother of Yang Shangkun, China's president from 1988 to 1993. The elder Yang passed away in 1998 at the age of 92.
Yang Baibing joined the CPC in 1938. He fought in both the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945) and China's civil war(1945-1949).
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Yang took up several posts in the Southwest Military Area Command and Chengdu Military Area Command.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), he was persecuted and imprisoned for 8 years.
Yang returned to work after the third plenary session of the 11th CPC Central Committee in 1978, at which Deng Xiaoping and his comrades launched the epoch-making reform and opening-up drive.
He became deputy director of the Political Department of the Beijing Military Area Command in 1979. In 1985, he became the political commissar of the Beijing Military Area Command.
In November 1987, Yang was appointed chief of the PLA General Political Department. From November 1989 to October 1992, Yang served as secretary-general of the Central Military Commission and chief of the PLA General Political Department.
Yang was a member of the Secretariat of the 13th CPC Central Committee and a member of the Political Bureau of the 14th CPC Central Committee.
