6 More Found Infected after Hepatitis C Outbreak

A recent outbreak of Hepatitis C near the border of Henan and Anhui provinces has led to the infection of 168 people in total, according to a report in Wednesday's Beijing Times.

The outbreak was first identified on November 17 and is believed to have originated from injections carried out by an unlicensed clinic.

"Eight more in Anhui have tested positive for the Hepatitis C virus following the results of 56 people who also tested positive during a preliminary screening taken a few days earlier", said Niu Chuanxi, director of the clinical laboratory at the Woyang County People's Hospital of Anhui province, after the results for the latest infected patients were released on Tuesday.

A total of 104 people in Yongcheng city in Henan also tested positive for Hepatitis C on Tuesday according to the authorities of Yongcheng City's Health Bureau.

Health authorities in Anhui province suspect that this latest epidemic was caused by unhygienic intravenous injection carried out at an unlicensed clinic situated on the border of two provinces.

Villagers of the Dancheng township of Woyang city in Anhui said, "the village clinic was run by Wu Wenyi. He never changed needles for his patients and never revealed the details of the medication he prescribed".

Wu Wenyi is an unlicensed doctor; further investigations are underway.
