Blood donations in Beijing are expected to drop by about 10 percent, the first decrease in recent years. Though the decrease won't impact the blood supply for first aid, it may case some surgical operations to be postponed, reported the Beijing News citing a statement from Beijing Red Cross Blood Center.
Hit by the Guo Meimei incident and other credibility scandals, the Red Cross Society of China has been suffering from public distrust and fewer donations, especially blood donation.
Blood donation in the first half of 2011 fell five percent compared to that of 2010, the Blood Center predicted a ten percent year-on-year plunge for 2011.
At present, all of the four blood types are in urgent need. The current blood stock accounts for only 60 to 70 percent of the standard stock volume, some surgical operations have had to be suspended as a result, according to a senior staff member at the Blood Center.
To narrow the blood supply gap, the Blood Center has launched voluntary donation in universities, with many students participating in the charity.
