90 per cent of the urban groundwater in China is contaminated with poisonous pollutants and the quality of 40 per cent of that is getting even worse, according to statistics from China's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Ministry of Land and Resources, the China Business Times reports.
Experts say the pollution of groundwater is due to the low urban sewage treatment rate, which was only 73 per cent in 2009 and is expected to reach 80 per cent this year. The paper quoted an anonymous source within the industry as saying that the sewage treatment efficiency must increase by 67 per cent during the 12th five-year plan period to meet demand. A report from the Greenpeace Organization shows that 14 global clothing brands are also responsible for water pollution in China.
China will focus on dealing with major water pollutants such as ammonia and nitrogen over the next 5 years and will raise the management fee for sewage water accordingly. |
