Tolls Reduced for Capital Airport Expressway

Vehicles entering Beijing from Beijing International Airport will no longer be charged with the existing expressway toll from July 1. Tolls for those traveling in the opposite direction will also be reduced, the Beijing Times reported.

According to a recent plan announced by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, the toll for vehicles going to the airport will be reduced from the current ten yuan per passenger car unit each time to five yuan at Tianzhu toll station, while other toll stations will keep their toll standard at five yuan. Sanza toll station will be removed.

It is the second time that tolls have been reduced for the Airport Expressway since October 2009.

Tolls for the Airport Expressway have been disputed for a long time. It is argued that the expressway should be open to the public for free as its income has far exceeded the investment.

The toll reduction was hailed by netizens, however, some people also worried that the expressway will become more crowded because of the lower cost.

The worry has been admitted by the expressway company, which has estimated that the flow of traffic on the expressway will increase by 15 to 20 percent after tolls are reduced.

Related traffic management departments have made emergency plans to ease possible congestion.
