The Zhengdong New District, part of the new town of Zhengzhou city, capital of central China's Henan Province, has attracted a great number of citizens, companies and financial institutions.

The new district, located in the eastern part of Zhengzhou and constructed to boost further the city's development, is now inhabited by more than 320,000 residents in a 65-square-kilometer area after eight years of construction. Further construction is still underway.

Guo Chengming, Director of the Zhengdong Management Committee, said the district's design places great emphasis on the environment and is very suitable for living.

"After careful planning, the new district was constructed with large areas of grass and water," Guo said.

Almost half of the central business district (CBD), which covers about 3.45 square kilometers and is the center of the new district, is covered by grass and water. In addition to a better environment compared to the old town, the new district also provides a sufficient number of public facilities, including the Henan Art Center, schools and hospitals, Guo said.

"Currently, all the best hospitals in the city have set up their branches here," Guo said.

Most citizens seem to be satisfied with the new town.

"It is a modern town with good facilities that are resident-friendly," said one resident who declined to give his name.

The new district's environment has also attracted companies to set up their headquarters here. At present, more than 70 Global 500 and China 500 enterprises have invested in the CBD.

More than two-thirds of the total 100 billion Yuan (US$15 billion) invested in the new district during its eight years of construction, has been non-government investment, Guo said.

"We keep offering an excellent environment and services in the new district," he said. "The enterprises come on their own since they believe the environment is suitable for their development."

About 73 financial institutions have set up branches in the CBD, making it one of the areas with the greatest number of financial institutions inside the province and central China.

Zhengdong New District is the core region of the new town of Zhengzhou city, a pilot and demonstration area for city planning in the Economic Region of Central China.
