China Shuts Down 62 Pornographic Websites
2011-04-01 02:16:22    Xinhua      Web Editor: Chudaye

China has recently shut down 62 websites which contained or disseminated pornographic pictures, videos and ads, the Information Office of the State Council said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the closed websites, which were registered in 15 provinces and municipalities, featured pornographic videos and pictures. The websites also facilitated prostitution and organized nude video talks.

The statement said the crackdown was carried out according to laws and regulations.

China launched a special campaign in Dec. 2009 to remove pornographic and vulgar content from the Internet, including through mobile connections.

The campaign has effectively curbed the dissemination of pornographic content on the Internet, the statement said.

"However, the campaign will be a long battle and government agencies will make concerted efforts to attain a clean Internet environment to facilitate the healthy development of adolescents," the statement said.
