Chen Guangbiao, the Chinese mainland's most famous philanthropist, will continue his generous donations during his second tour to Taiwan in May, website chinataiwan.org reports.
The mainland tycoon issued the news via his micro-blog and called on more entrepreneurs from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to participate in the charity tour. He also provided an e-mail address and a fax number in an update.
Earlier this year, Chen, who is the chief executive officer of Jiangsu Huangpu Recycling Resources Co. Ltd. in east China's Jiangsu province, led a delegation of more than 50 entrepreneurs from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan, handing out red envelopes with cash inside to people in need.
It was reported that the delegation took NT$500 million (US$17 million) to give to charities during the weeklong tour of the island.
Although some people criticized Chen's high-profile deed, saying it might make recipients feel undignified, the philanthropist wrote on his micro-blog that he wanted to express gratitude to the people of Taiwan for their help to the mainland following natural disasters and to help the poor to celebrate the Spring Festival, China's most important traditional holiday.
During a previous interview, Chen, who has won China's Charity Award, said he planned to make a philanthropic visit to Taiwan an annual event.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Li Liguo, China's Minister of Civil Affairs said Chen "was doing a good thing, and his philanthropic actions may inspire others to do the same."
Xinhua News Agency quoted Li as saying, "I believe all philanthropic actions, both high-profile or anonymous, should be encouraged." |
