Southwest China's Chongqing municipality is holding a martial arts competition to select new members for its antiterrorism police force, "The Chongqing Evening News" reports.

The martial arts competition is the first of its kind in the country held to try to find suitable recruits for the local police force, the report said.

A total of 162 candidates from all parts of China compete for 50 posts on Chongqing's antiterrorism lightning team by demonstrating their martial arts skills onstage on February 20-25, the report said.

All candidates have to take a series of exams, including a written exam, physical fitness test, psychological test and skills test as well as have an interview.

The skills test covers boxing, free combat, judo, taekwondo and free-style wrestling along with diving and a cross-country race.

Qualified antiterrorism policemen must possess special physical skills and comprehensive qualities, be psychologically fit and have a moral sense of responsibility, said Guo Weiguo, vice chief of the local public security bureau.

Chongqing is known for its severe crackdowns on violent gangs.
