Shanghai Sees Unexpected Population Growth

The population of Shanghai has increased unexpectedly with a population growth rate that is higher than Beijing, eastday.com reports.

The primary result of China's sixth national population census which was conducted last November shows that the population of Shanghai has reached 23 million, said Ding Jinhong, a professor on population research from East China Normal University. Among them, 14 million people have local household registrations.

The transient population of the city has increased from 3.87 million in 2000 to 9 million. If 20 to 22 percent of them stay in Shanghai for less than half a year, the permanent population of the city is expected to have reached 21 million, said Ding. Thus over 600,000 people were added to Shanghai's permanent population every year from 2005 to 2010.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the permanent population of the city was 19.21 million by the end of 2009.

The final result of Shanghai's population census will be released in April.
