Miners with Black Lung Promised Medical Treatment

Sixteen miners with black lung disease, or pneumoconiosis, in Gulang County of northwest China's Gansu Province have left for Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province for better treatment.

All the medical costs will be covered by the local government of their home province and by private donations, China National Radio reported Monday. Till now, 4.8 million yuan has been collected.

Other sufferers have also received medical treatment and financial assistance.

The cases were first exposed in January 2010, when the Chinese media published lengthy investigative reports about miners at a Mazongshan gold mine suffering from black lung disease.

The illness is caused by inhaling dust when working in mines for extended periods of time.

However, it was hard for the miners to claim compensation from the former employers. Most workers didn't sign a contract with the company and the mine's ownership was changed multiple times over the past 20 years.

The provincial government will make every effort to find all mine owners and so far 19 of them have been identified, said an official of Human Resources and Social Security Department of Gansu Province.
