A man fell to death from an escalator at a shopping mall located in Beijing's central Dongcheng district Friday morning, the Beijing News Radio reports.

Police told that the tragedy occurred around 11.50am at Raffles City, a commercial compound in Dongzhimen area, when the man fell from escalator on the fifth floor and died upon impact.

Immediately after the accident, some witnesses uploaded photos of the accident scene to the Internet, claiming a foreign man was shot to death before the falling.

Police refuted the rumor by saying he was not shot, excluding the possibility of murder after initial investigation.

The man was a Chinese, aged 60, and from east China's Shandong Province, the police said.

Further investigation is underway.
