New York University (NYU), the largest private university in the United States, plans to co-build a degree-granting campus with East China Normal University in Shanghai, Chinanews.com reports.

The NYU Shanghai campus will be China's first international university co-established by higher-learning institutes from the two countries, media reports said.

Located in Lujiazui, one of Shanghai's business zones, the branch campus will attract students from home and abroad with its high educational quality, advanced disciplines and management, and faculty members with considerable academic and professional experience.

The report says at least 50 percent of the recruited students will be from China.

Campus construction will begin in March and be completed in 2013.

The university will be fully financed by local public and private partners and follow the investment model of NYU's first branch abroad in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Yu Lizhong, President of East China Normal University, said the two universities aimed to explore new approaches to operating and managing an international university and customizing disciplines to the needs of the current economic situation.
