A senior at Nanjing Normal University has traveled 3,700 kilometers in 13 days by hitchhiking 25 rides to Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China, "The Beijing News" reports.

"I made this trip not because I cannot afford a train ticket to return home," Hu Beilei told the newspaper.

Hu said he drew his inspiration from the documentary television series "To Berlin By Thumb" in which two Chinese-Americans hitchhike from Beijing to Berlin. The pair caught 88 rides in 13 countries in the more than 100 days they spent on the road.

Hu left Nanjing, Jiangsu Province in south China, on December 25, 2010, carrying only a sleeping bag, map, clothes, biscuits, camera, postcards and 160 yuan ($24). Although Hu did not have a travel plan, he intended to get back home along Route 312 which goes to the western part of the country, the report said.

Hu experienced a countless number of rejections during the trip, although 25 drivers did offer him lifts. With their assistance, he eventually arrived home on January 8.

"Hitchhiking made me realize I should help strangers more (and) to open my heart," Hu was quoted as saying. "This world is not as dangerous as we imagine. As long as you have courage and step out of your everyday life, you will find someone who will help you."
