Five people were killed and four others were injured in a colliery explosion in southwest China's Guizhou Province Sunday, the local government said.

The accident was reported at Huanghegou pit in Xixiu District of Anshun City at 4 p.m., said Yang Guili, secretary-general of the Anshun city government.

He said the injured were being treated at a local hospital.

Yang said the accident happened when mine workers were removing some explosives that did not blow up during their blasting operations earlier in the afternoon.

Two local officials have been suspended from duty for investigation, including the work safety chief of Xixiu District.

The Huanghegou Coal Mine has a designed annual output of 90,000 tonnes.
