Winners of the first Harvard Club of Beijing Scholarship Fund were announced Thursday evening in Beijing. Qiao Mu, who holds a bachelor degree from Beijing University, will further his study for a PhD at Harvard University. Ai Cheng, a rising media star, will go to Harvard's Kennedy School to study for a master of public policy degree. Each of them won one hundred thousand yuan for their first year at Harvard.

Ai Cheng, the twenty three year old young lady who is more mature than her counterparts, has a strong desire to be a leader in the media industry and is very clear about what she'll do in the next ten to twenty years.

"I want to do more practical work as a host and reporter in the media industry between the ages of 20 to 29, and do something related to media management when I get to 30. If everything goes smoothly and I am lucky enough, I would like to have some impact in the policy making of the Chinese media industry when I am 40 years old."

Sun Yuhong, general-secretary of the Harvard Club of Beijing, who is also one of the initiators of this fund, said making things happen is very important and she hopes the fund can help more Chinese students enjoy their life at Harvard.

"There are many scholarship funds like this initiated by Harvard Clubs all over the world such as Australia and America. There are over one thousand alumni in China and we should get together financially and spiritually to transfer the strength. We hope to help more students make their experience at Harvard a great adventure."

Fu Jun, president of the Harvard Club of Beijing, divided people's career path into two categories. One is basic science study and the other is professional career related. When they select the winners of the fund, a very important standard is deciding in which of these two fields candidates are outstanding, and whether they have the potential to be a leader in their field.

He Boquan, chairman of Guangdong Nowaday Investment Company, is the first donor to the Beijing Scholarship Fund. He used to be a visiting scholar at Harvard University and the experience has had a great impact on his life. He hopes to help more outstanding Chinese people who get the offer to study at Harvard focus on their study without worrying about financial problems. When these people graduate and have the ability, they can give more contribution to society and help more Chinese alumni to further their study and shine in the field they are interested in on an international level.

Apart from some masters and doctors from Harvard, four young Chinese students who have just got the offer to study for bachelor degrees also attended the scholarship award ceremony and shared their life experience and future plans.
