The carcasses of more than 40,000 livestock killed in the April 14 earthquake in northwest China have been buried, according to the Qinghai provincial agriculture and animal husbandry department.

The department had dispatched more than 500 animal epidemic prevention personnel since April 17 to disinfect the areas where the carcasses were buried, said Sun Yingxiang, vice director of the department's veterinary bureau.

The department had immunized around 30,760 Tibetan mastiffs against rabies in the quake zone and all remaining mastiffs would be immunized by Friday.

Immunization against anthrax and foot-and-mouth disease were also underway and would be completed by May 10.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed 2,220 people, and 70 people still missing. More than 12,000 were injured, and tens of thousands of residential buildings collapsed.
