A bridge in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province collapsed early Monday, leaving four people dead and four injured. Thirteen others were saved without injuries, according to dbw.cn.

The collapse occurred at 2:34 a.m. on one side of the Xida Bridge spanning the Hulan River in Tieli City, the city's Vice Mayor Li Qingsheng said at a news briefing Monday.

Rescuers also hoisted seven trucks and one van from the river. But nobody could say for sure the exact number of motor vehicles traveling on the bridge when the accident occurred.

An initial investigation showed that the bridge collapse was caused by a truck that was both overloaded and oversized. The truck was carrying steel and construction materials that were estimated at least 60 tons.

The collapsed bridge is now under police control.

The bridge was built in 1973 and repaired in 1997 due to security concerns.
