Yang Lihong's life savings amounting to RMB18,000 (over 2,600 US dollars) have been turned to tatters after he found the bills nibbled away by mice in his house in southeast China's Zhejiang province.
Zjol.com reported on Monday that the banknotes stored in Yang's stove were chewed into pieces by the mice.
The rodents were enjoying their expensive nest when Yang went to fetch the money to buy rice last week and discovered what had happened.
80-year-old Yang worked as a guard for a local factory. The money was the result of ten years of saving.
The old man thought the stove the safest place in his home but didn't take the mice into account.
Yang took his torn bills to his local Agricultural Bank and was able to have six thousand yuan replaced.
To avoid the same thing happening again, Yang chose to place the remaining money in the bank.
