Alison Shanks of New Zealand on Friday won the title of the women's individual pursuit, the first gold medal of the 2008-2009 UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Beijing at the Laoshan Velodrome.
Shanks beat her arch rival Vilijia Sereikaite from Lithuania for the victory. Sereikaite took the silver and Svitlana Galyuk of Ukraine, who was ahead of Russian Elena Vhslykh, finished third.
The three-day tournament attracts the top riders from 37 countries and regions for a total of 16 gold medals, nine for men's and seven for women's.
