South Korea edged New Zealand 4-3 to get two straight wins at the Four Nations Women's Football Tournament in Guangzhou on Monday.
The South Koreans trounced Finland 4-0 in the last game and now sit on top of the table with six points. New Zealand, who lost to hosts China 6-0 in the first game, has to take the bottom seat with two bare hands.
Lee Eun Mi scored twice from two set-pieces in early first half. The left midfielder curved a wicked corner to beat keeper Jenny Bindon directly five minutes into the game, before poked home a free kick in the 13th minute.
Striker Amber Hearn pulled one back for the Kiwis with a header following a clumsy clearance from a South Korean defender on 58 minutes. But the South Koreans made two goals in the counter-attacks, and the scorers were substitutes Jeon Ga Eul and Go Tae Hwa.
However, New Zealand didn't drop their efforts in the dying minutes. Substitute Hannah Wall smashed home a powerful left-foot shot from 25 meters in the 85th minute, before made another with a fine header five minutes later. If fellow striker Kirsty Yallop's 87-min penalty did not hit the bar, the Kiwis could have ground out a draw.
