Energy structure, designing efficient and flexible energy market, advantages of regional cooperation and new technology potentials, as well as solutions to deal with challenges due to increasing demands for energy and climate change, are the main contents put under discussion by participants to the 3-day Asia-Pacific Energy Summit 2012 held in Hanoi during March 20-22.

Themed "Innovative Generation: Powering a Prosperous Asia," and jointly held by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the U.S. National Bureau of Asia Research, the conference attracted 150 researchers, policy makers and business people from nearly 20 countries, reported local Vietnam News Agency Friday.

Participants shared a view that Asia is facing with challenges due to the increasing demand on energy for economic growth. This requires regional countries to quickly renovate the energy system and shift to use new sources of energy and renewable energy, and expand the power distribution network and consumption to rural and remote areas, aimed at maintaining high economic growth for sustainable development, reducing poverty and protecting the environment.

They suggested regional governments create an environment to encourage more investment in developing the new sources of energy and applying technologies to production of clean energy and efficient power saving.

They said the biggest barrier to building an effective energy market is to define properly the prices of electricity, coal and liquefied gas.

Currently, the governments often fix the prices lower than the production prices, which make many power companies suffer from financial instability and can not expand production to meet the market's increasing demand. The incorrect prices also make the investment environment less attractive to investors in the field.

To define fuel prices flexibly upon the market demand will help provide an environment for fair competitiveness, thus businesses are forced to use effective power saving, they said.

Regarding regional cooperation on energy, participants highlighted successful examples in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal), Southeast Asia (Vietnam, China and countries in the Greater Mekong sub-region), and APEC, with enhancement of power security, improvement of power saving, and clean power supply.

The regional initiative "Smart power network" also attracted attention of the participants, along with the United Nations' goals to make 2012 the year of "Sustainable energy for All Countries" and for new approach to power users with reducing cost.

Participants also discussed development of nuclear power in Asia, and made practical recommendations on power policies in region and in Vietnam in particular, for sustainable economic growth.
