Johnson & Johnson Hong Kong has recalled 16 batches of its "1 Day Acuvue TruEye" contact lenses as they may cause eye prickling.

The company says the recalled-3,700 boxes of products were not sold in stores on the Chinese mainland, but are available in online shops.

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Beijing said the Acuvue series is available on the Chinese mainland, but the materials are different from that of the questioned products.

The company first received reports of the lens' negative effects in Japan, where consumers complained about "abnormal pain or prickling" in eyes as wearing the lens.

Hong Kong Department of Health officials recommended consumers to stop using the product immediately and go to a hospital if they have any relevant symptoms.

The product is mainly sold in South Korea, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
