Actor and filmmaker Stephen Chow has a new role - political advisor.
The veteran Hong Kong comedian has been elected to the advisory body of Guangdong, a southern Chinese province neighboring Hong Kong, according to People's Daily Online.
In the next five years, Chow will join other 977 political advisors at Guangdong's political consultative conference and participate in the deliberation and administration of provincial affairs.
An unnamed source with the Guangdong provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference said he expected Chow's election to bring more public attention to the conference.
The newly announced list includes 93 residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, among them well-known TV personalities Ma Dingsheng and Sally Wu.
Celebrities form an indispensable part of China's political advisory body. Filmmakers Zhang Yimou and Feng Xiaogang, for example, were members of the 11th national committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
